The Most Notorious Unsolved Crimes in History Cases That Still Baffle Investigators

The Black Dahlia, as Elizabeth Short was posthumously nicknamed, received much attention in Los Angeles in 1947 after she was brutally murdered. She was found dead in an abandoned piece of land, which was so deformed that one could only wonder who could have done such a thing. Equally, however, due to the efforts made to follow thousands of leads, the case was left unsolved for a long period of time. To date, the murder of the Black Dahlia has remained an unsolved mystery, though many theories have been given out.

The Disappearance of Amelia Earhart

Amelia Earhart disappeared in 1937 whilst on an attempt to circumnavigate the globe through the Pacific. Her disappearance led to a large-scale search operation, but nothing was heard of her or the navigator, Fred Noonan, after that incident. There have been several hypotheses that have been made in the past, including the loss through sea crash or the group being captured by the Japanese. She has remained missing, which makes it even more so that more historians and aviation aficionados alike continue to remain fascinated by the disappearance of this aircraft.

The Disappearance of D.B. Cooper

On November 24, 1971, a man who goes by the name of D. B. Cooper took a Northwest Orient Airlines flight and threatened with a bomb and demanded $200,000, parachuting himself from the plane in the night. Unfortunately, no amount of search operations could lead to the arrest of Cooper, and till today, it remains unclear what happened to him. To date, the true identity of the man and what befell him after his jump is something that has received much interest, probably triggering the numerous investigations and conspiracy theories.

The Mary Celeste

In 1872 the Mary Celeste one shoe was found deserted in the Atlantic Ocean with no sign of its occupants or they were missing. Indeed, the ship seems to be in good condition as it was discovered with part of the cargo tossed around. Some of the theories include mutiny and piracy to mention but a few, and to the date, no evidence linking the disappearance of the Mary Celeste’s crew has been got to this date.

These crimes are remembered to this date and have not been well understood by the investigators. For each case, some factors have physical constraints and lacking data from the past while others are technological.
